Culver General Discussion / Culver work
« on: May 10, 2014, 11:17:31 PM »
Even though winter has finally given up here in Ct. My Culver project is moving forward. My firewall is reinstalled and I have fitted the wing truss but have removed it so that I have better access when fitting the fuel tank and rudder pedals. I have spent the most time cleaning and painting small parts. I found that the tank strap supports were weak where the straps attach and spent a fair amount of time.fixing and strengthening this area.It holds the weight of the tank and gas.I am sending out this letter in the hopes of hearing that other Culver enthusiasts are enjoying restoring their aircraft. The Forum is quiet. Thanks Craig Hewitt

Culver General Discussion / culver cadet

Well I finally had the chance to fly a Culver. While in Fla. to visit my son we drove over to Oak Hill and visited Vaughn Grasso. He owns a beautiful LFA restored by Jim Jenkins .This aircraft had an Aeomatic prop and it really performed. The Franklin turned 2700rpm on takeoff so it got off well with 2 aboard and 10 gallons of gas. What a responsive airplane. It was raining all around us so the flight was only about 20 minutes but it really enthused me to get my own Cadet in the air. His Culver is for sale but I can't afford another right now. Thanks again Vaughn. Craig

Where the wing bolts secure the wing to the main structure I noticed that a couple of the holes are elongated slightly.Has anyone else run into this and what would be considered a proper fix? Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks Craig I'm not sure of the proper name for the main structure.

While my fuselage is on its side I am doing a dry run with my fuel tank. Are people still using the Model a style shutoff or is there something more modern or lighter? Is the o ring for the gauge available ? Has anyone ever used paint remover on the aluminum tank?Did the filler neck have an o ring as well where it goes through the fuselage? Thanks Craig
